DAILY DETOX: Removing Toxins With Tea

One of my favorite health sayings is, “If you're not cleansing, you're accumulating.” I am always thinking of new and convenient ways to rid my body of toxins on a DAILY basis and one of the best ways I’ve found is with tea. I use specific teas as part of my daily effort against toxin accumulation.

A lot of people think they can do a juice cleanse once in a blue moon and be set for the year (or life), but that’s simply not the case. Detoxification should be a daily effort since we are exposed to toxins every single day of our lives (no matter who you are). We live in a world full of toxins and toxic chemicals. We’re exposed to these through air pollution, household cleaners, chemicals in our food and water, radiation, prescription drugs and even in our skin care products.

You wouldn’t have a house party every day and only clean it once or twice a year, would you? Tidying up every day will keep everything working optimally and prevent things from getting too out of hand. My favorite way to keep everything in check with my body is with my detoxifying teas, and it's something I've always practiced, long before these trendy teas were all over the internet.

Your liver is what does most of the detoxing in your body and when it isn’t working as well as it should, it will affect your whole body.  Being the beauty junkie that I am, I tend to be most fascinated with the external effects poor liver function can have. When your liver gets backed up with toxins and isn’t functioning at its optimal level, it manifests as skin and body issues. Your skin and body are direct reflections of what is going on inside of your body. A HEALTHY, functioning liver is also reflected in your appearance (think glowing skin and a lean body) because it’s flushing out unwanted toxins that may otherwise show up on your face or affect your figure.

The liver isn’t just about eliminating toxins — it is key to your overall health and weight since it's responsible for breaking down fat. It aids in digestion by producing bile to help process fat and it plays a part in regulating glucose, blood sugar, insulin, estrogen, and testosterone. An overworked, stressed out liver can cause fat to build up, especially around the belly. This means that no matter how much you restrict calories or exercise, weight loss might be impossible for you — unless you detox your liver.

As you can see, the state of your insides, and more specifically, your liver, is directly responsible for the state of your outsides which is why I might even have kind of a sick obsession with detoxing my body.

Instead of drinking numerous cups of plain water in a day, I swap several cups for my detox teas that pack in so much more health benefits. Drinking flavored tea is also more enjoyable taste-wise for me than water alone when it comes to getting my fluids in for the day. Since tea is essentially water, it will also help plump up your skin, diminish fine lines, and keep your skin looking hydrated and youthful (decaffeinated tea, that is).

If you've noticed that your complexion has stopped glowing like it used to or that you are having a hard time losing that extra bit of belly fat, then this practice might be for you.

I’m breaking down the most powerful, cleansing, toxin-flushing teas out there that I make myself on the daily. You’ll notice that most of these teas primarily focus on aiding liver function to help stimulate its natural process of detoxification and digestion. Sometimes I even blend 2 different tea bags in one cup for one mega dose of detox. (Just be sure you know what’s in each blend so that you’re not doubling up and repeating ingredients!)

Milk thistle is shown to decrease, or even reverse, damage to the liver that’s been caused by prescription medications, antibiotics, and so on. Milk thistle is also effective at naturally reversing the harmful effects of alcohol consumption, pesticides in our food supply, heavy metals in our water supply, pollution in the air that we breathe, and even poisons!

The vitamins and nutrients present in dandelions help cleanse our livers and keep them working properly. Dandelion raises the amounts of enzymes that are known to help detox the body. It can even help remove carcinogens, which are substances known to cause cancers. Dandelion tea is a great diuretic, so it will help your body eliminate toxins through your urine and can also cleanse the skin from the inside out as it hinders the growth of bacteria.

This blend cleans out your liver with a combination of chicory root and schisandra berry which have long been used to treat liver dysfunction. Chicory removes toxins out of the body by revving up your entire digestive system, increasing urination, and stimulating the bowels to remove toxins and waste out of the body. Schisandra berry increases your body’s level of the detoxifying enzyme glutathione which is critical for the detoxification of carcinogens, heavy metals such as mercury, cadmium and lead, and common chemicals such as BPA.

This tea is specifically geared towards detoxing and cleansing the skin! It’s made with burdock root to reduce internal impurities that show up on your skin. Burdock root is a powerful diuretic so it helps the body purge toxins through the urine. It improves liver function which helps your body become more efficient at ridding itself of toxins each day, but what I’m really crazy about is this: Burdock contains a compound called polyacetylene, which has antibacterial and antifungal properties. This compound has been used by herbalists to treat acne and abscesses for centuries as it increases circulation to the skin and helps detoxify the epidermal tissues of the body!

Hopefully I’ve convinced you that you should be incorporating some of these teas into your life! One thing I love to do (which I’m constantly made fun of about) is always keep a stash of my detox teas in my purse. When I’m out at dinner I order hot water and add my own tea bag, which usually inspires some jokes from the company I’m with. I’ve been called an old lady — a 68 year old woman trapped inside a 23 year olds body! BUT, I still love to do this and I feel good knowing I’m ridding my body of toxins no matter what. I hope you’ll join me in this practice of daily detoxing, however and whenever you’d like to do it!
