For Inner & Outer Beauty

I’m writing about this topic for 2 reasons —1) I’ve realized that most people don’t routinely take vitamins and 2) Those that know they “should”, often times don’t know what to take or the reason behind it.

I grew up religiously taking vitamins before bed every night at a very young age. I thought it was law and just as necessary as brushing your teeth, which I see now was largely influenced by the fact that my father is a doctor. At sleepovers with friends, I was (and still am) always so shocked when I see that other people don’t take any vitamins before bed. It is so alien to me! I have actually turned down sleeping over at friends houses in the past if I was out somewhere late because I “had to” go home for my vitamins — I know, I’m crazy. But you don’t have to be as devout as me, I swear!

In high school, we had to write a 15 page term paper on something we were passionate about — I chose vitamins. Again, I know I’m crazy. At the time, I remember having in depth conversations with my dad about this topic. The conversations were mainly centered around this point:

Fruits and vegetables grown decades ago were much richer in vitamins and minerals than the ones we eat today. The reason for this is soil depletion, meaning due to years and years of growing crops on the same soil we are depleting the amount of nutrients present in that soil. It is a scientific fact that there is declining nutritional content in the food we grow for each successive generation. The key to healthy produce is healthy soil, and if we are running that soil thin of its nutrients, then we cannot expect our food to maintain its same level of nutrition. I remember reading one study that said someone would have to eat 8 oranges today to get the same amount of Vitamin A as our grandparents would have gotten from just 1 orange. SCARY!

Which brings me to my point about multi-vitamins. A multi-vitamin basically serves as insurance, a safety net to fill in any and all of the areas you are lacking in from your diet alone. As you now know from my speech on soil, even if you’re eating fruits and veggies all day long, you are most likely still lacking in the nutrients your body needs (and lets be real, no one is eating fruits and veggies all day, every day... not even me).

I have taken and tested each one of these at some point in my life and rotate between them. The common factor I look for when choosing a vitamin is that the product is grown in rich organic non-GMO soil with enough sun, air, water and time for it to be its best, rather than grown from a synthetically made formula in a lab. This is key to making sure you're paying for a power-packed nutritious food supplement.

I also leave a different bottle of vitamins at all the different places I routinely sleep just to be safe that I’m never without them!

In this list, you’ll see a lot of adult gummy vitamins because I went through a phase where I couldn’t swallow any more hard pills without gagging (TMI, sorry) and gummies are still my preference at the moment!

I’m sure you are convinced by now why you should be taking a multi-vitamin, but I tend to be somewhat of a supplement queen and don’t stop there. I’ve provided you with the rest of the vitamins, powders, and potions I value as part of my daily routine as well. A multi-vitamin is necessary, whereas these are great add-ons.

These are a single serving pouch of a high-concentration blend of electrolytes. This is absolutely necessary for me after a workout where I’ve been sweating buckets it feels like. I start to feel nauseous and fatigued when my electrolyte supply gets depleted so I never skip this after exercising. I add the contents of a pouch to a glass of water and enjoy! The saltiness of it is also SO good, I wish I could have more than one serving a day!

This is another electrolyte supplement. I’ll have this if I don’t have any Right Stuff on hand. I prefer Right Stuff because it has 0 calories and 0 grams of sugar, whereas Liquid IV is 50 calories and has 11 grams of sugar. I am NOT a calorie counter but if I have the choice, I’ll take the no calorie option since the two supplements are essentially performing the same function.

I take a probiotic shot EVERY single day. Never underestimate the power of a probiotic — Your belly, brain, and skin are all connected. When we have an imbalance in the gut it will cause imbalances in our mental health (affecting moods and emotions) and skin. Likewise, when we have an imbalance in our mental health, it will affect our skin and gut. I like to take a daily probiotic where my hope is that I set this cycle going in the RIGHT direction. It’s clearly a delicate balance that requires some care and is why I ultimately believe incorporating probiotics into your daily routine is essential for true synergy.

I love to add this to smoothies for a number of reasons. Spirulina is a blue-green algae that acts as a powerful detoxifier for the skin because of its high chlorophyll content. It helps brighten the overall complexion and has also been shown to help eliminate dark circles.

I wish I could keep taking this! Unfortuntaely, my doctor told me to discontinue it because one of the herbal ingredients used can interfere with the effectiveness of my birth control. BUT, if you’re not on birth control, I highly reccomend this. It helps protect your skin from oxidative stress, preserves collagen, reduces fatigue, helps the body cope with stress, reduces irritability, controls stress-related weight gain, and promotes a calm state of mind.

This is another supplement I sadly cannot take anymore but when I was taking it, I loved it! Again, one of the herbal ingredients can interfere with the effectiveness of birth control. Nevertheless, it contains 39 beauty detox superfoods that nourish and cleanse from the inside out to support radiant skin and boost your metabolism. This powder also includes adaptogens which is just a fancy name for any herbs that counteract the effects of mental, physical, and emotional stress in the body AND restore normal physiological functioning.

I’m so addicted to all of Olly’s gummies. This one contains hyaluronic acid (which plumps, smooths, and moisturizes the skin), marine collagen (which contributes to your skin’s strength and structure), and Sea Buckthorn (which contains phytonutrients to nourish your skin).

This blend contains Biotin (essential for healthy hair, nails, and skin cells), Vitamin C (a key nutrient in the production of collagen and youthful glow), and Keratin (a protein that nourishes your hair).

This blend is made with Antioxidants (Vitamin A and E to help fight free radicals and support a clear complexion), Minerals (Zinc to generate new, healthy skin tissue and Selenium to detox cells), and Botanicals (Phytonutrients like Spearmint, Aronia Berry, & Dandelion Root for detoxification).

This powder contains transformative superherbs that help combat the effects of stress to expand your beauty, luster, and glow from within. The “dust” has powerful, broad spectrum antioxidants that help protect cells from free radical damage, preserve collagen, and help enhance elasticity of the skin.

This powder supports your gut with a built in probiotic, promotes healthy skin with antioxidants that reduce internal and external inflammation, and boosts collagen synthesis. It has a really nice berry flavor that I love to mix with a little apple juice!

These are really fun to drink and pop in some water (I actually add a tablet to sparking water for some extra fizz). These tablets contain 8 essential greens (spinach, organic wheatgrass, kale, organic blue green algae, organic spirulina, organic chlorella, organic barley grass, organic aloe vera) that help make up for the fact that none of us are consuming nearly as much greens as we should on a daily basis. It helps detox organs, oxygenate the body, reduce the effects of aging, alkalize the body and provide vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants you're likely missing. I also love that they are so convenient to keep in your purse and use at any time.

This is a fun and healthy twist on one of my favorites — hot coco. This supplement contains a cacao blend with reishi mushrooms which are jam-packed with antioxidants and health-promoting compounds. Reishi mushrooms help with the immune system, inflammation, fatigue, skin disorders, sleep disorders, anxiety, depression, and stress. If I’m in the mood for a treat, but still something beneficial to my health, I love to incorporate this.

I love this one partly because of the sleek, luxe packaging (makes for a cute gift idea), but also because of what’s inside! This supplement helps your body heal and repair from inflammation caused by sugar, dairy, alcohol, and stress. It’s made with greens, turmeric, mushrooms, acai, pomegranate, omega 3, and more to increase energy, stronger immunity and glowing skin.

I’m not a fan of hard capsules and prefer to take my supplements in either powder or gummy form, but if your’e not opposed to swallowing capsules this might be for you. This supplement promotes anti-aging and skin health with the ingredient Purslane, known for its potent anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidative, nutritive and repairing effect. Each capsule also contains Japanese Knotweed Root extract, which is rich in anti-aging compound Resveratrol, and Glucosamine to support the body's natural production of plumping Hyaluronic Acid.

I love the concept of this product. It’s a liquid form, so you can think of it as your internal skin serum! This one is for anyone concerned about skin texture, firmness and fine lines or anyone who desires naturally plump skin from the inside out. This has been scientifically formulated to help boost your skin’s natural collagen production and therefore support healthy skin structure and cultivate a smoother complexion.

I love Dr. Nigma and her book, “Younger Skin Starts In The Gut”. She is a naturopath who believes in the strong link between digestive health and premature aging. It’s no wonder that her line of supplements reflect that belief system and address gut health and healthy skin with 23 powerful ingredients including Marine Collagen and Probiotics to help slow down the signs of aging.

This is a blend of skin-protecting superfoods that helps preserve natural collagen while hydrating and plumping skin from the inside out. This supplement helps minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles while helping to protect skin from free radical damage that causes loss of firmness and elasticity of the skin. It’s made with Hyaluronic Acid, Silver Ear Mushroom, and Tocotrienols which help combat oxidative stress to protect your natural collagen and help prevent the visible signs of aging.

The nutrients we feed ourselves affect our bodies and impact our health, beauty, and happiness more than anything else I know, which is why supplemental choices are so powerful. I hope my recommendations can help make these sometimes difficult choices less confusing for you so you can start reaping all the benefits a full spectrum of vitamins has to offer. All of these supplements have one thing in common  they nourish the skin on the inside so it glows on the outside! You do NOT need to take all of these, in fact, doing so would be ridiculously overboard because there is overlap between a lot of these. These are, however, all supplements I’ve taken in the past or that I am currently taking. I'll rotate between them as they run out or as I get bored of them, but they are all great options and have landed a spot in my cabinet for a reason.
